Hugo Carrillo, General Manager of Vitapro, spoke at our AliTalks, learning and cultural spaces where we are inspired by stories that fuel a better tomorrow.
Through Hugo's story, we learned about the challenges and lessons on his journey to becoming the general manager of our aquaculture business, Vitapro (with a presence in Peru, Ecuador, Chile, and Honduras), and how the Global Mindset was critical to successfully leading a new, technical, and multicultural talent-driven environment.
The Global Mindset is a strategic capability that enables effective collaboration with diverse people and across different geographies, demonstrating intercultural respect and understanding of their businesses, as well as the geopolitical, social, and economic factors that impact each country.
“For example, in Chile, a highly developed market in the salmon industry, we worked with humility and learned from them, earning their respect and gaining their trust to invest in us. In Ecuador, the world’s second-largest shrimp producer, we supported their desire to keep growing. In Honduras, a country affected by violence, we offer a high-standard organization compared to what exists in that region,” says Hugo Carrillo.
The Global Mindset is not only applied to the countries where the company has a presence but is also a decisive factor when evaluating expansion into new potential markets.
“Aquaculture in Asia accounts for 80% of the global market, but the cultural gaps there are more challenging to bridge. We traveled to Indonesia, a Muslim country, where they stop up to three times a day during work hours to pray. It's crucial to understand that cultural difference,” adds Carrillo.
Similarly, intercultural respect is crucial to the Global Mindset, and this involves considering the personal space of employees and understanding what motivates each of them. “Some people like to travel a lot, others prefer to spend time with their families. We need to respect those differences, but ultimately, we need to work together to create synergies,” says the General Manager of Vitapro.
Thanks to this understanding, over the last three years, Vitapro has focused on Latin America, achieving annual growth rates of 15% to 20%, reaching a business value of $1.3 billion, and becoming the 7th largest aquaculture company in the world.
This first AliTalks event was a space developed by the Alicorp Leadership School, which aims to develop all the company's employees through a single leadership model.
At Alicorp, and through our School, we believe that the Global Mindset, along with our other six strategic capabilities—Long-term Perspective, Innovation, Customer Orientation, Change Leadership, Leadership with Purpose, and People Development—form the DNA that will allow our leaders to continue living our purpose of feeding a better tomorrow.
